Have you wondered how it would feel like – living in a container house, home or building - unusual, scary, surreal, or pretty comfortable, safe, warm, and protected? Actually, container buildings and homes are widely spread today and social stigma of treating the living in a house made from the used shipping containers as living in a can is no longer present. Thanks to the attention and efforts of many talented architects, inspired by the ideas of green living, today we have numerous completed projects of container buildings, capable of proving that this type of alternative housing is worth of wide public attention. Below we are going to present a fresh showcase of container buildings from all over the world.
Examples of Shipping Container Buildings
Freitag Shop in Zurich
Built from 17 used shipping containers, Freitag Shop is not only the tallest building in Zurich, but it is also the tallest container building in the world. Visitors come to Freitag Shop not only for shopping, but also to enjoy the panoramic view of Zurich from the view room, equipped at the very top container.
Puma City
Designed by LOT-EK, an architecture firm from NY, Puma City is an experimental yet absolutely real and completed container building, made for Volvo Ocean Race. 24 shipping containers were transformed into a transportable retail and event center to be presented at many locations during the Volvo Ocean Race.
The Box Office
32 recycled shipping containers were turned into a 12 office/studio center by Distill Studio, Stack Design Build, and Truth Box inc.
Polka Dot Container Building
Designed by Jure Kotnik, Slovenia, this container house is made of the new containers instead of the used or recycled ones. This makes the project not that green, but definitely adds a few more benefits to the inhabitants.
The View Tube
The View Tube is a community center, which is nothing but a container building by architecture, located in London near the Olympic Park. The View Tube offers a café, educational and art spots for the visitors as well as spectacular views of the Olympic Park.
Container Crossbox
Located in France, this shipping container building with a green roof, constructed from 4 used containers offers not only impressive look but also the ultimate level of comfort for its inhabitants.
As you can see from the pictures of container buildings above, container homes have already evolved into a separate self-sufficient form of modern architecture with distinct authentic aesthetics, specific ergonomic design, revolutionary construction techniques, and many benefits of green living.
